The E & S Market of the Future

Article Abstract:

The Excess and Surplus (E&S) lines industry grew dramatically from 1970 to 1983. 1983 is projected to show a decrease in volume to 1978 levels. Loss of premium dollars may be attributed to increased activity of admitted carriers in the surplus lines market, increase coastal exposure in gulf states, and an increased number of new non-admitted business. There is a future for E&S business. This can be seen in the New York Insurance Exchange's (NYIE) ability to write E&S business. The NYIE has an excess and surplus lines guaranty fund to prevent syndicate insolvency, thus assuring a secure. NYIE should attract syndicates which write direct business to offset the current industry trend of relying on the reinsurance volume. With an expansion into direct business the NYIE can become the E&S market of the future. Tables are included.

Communicating the message

Article Abstract:

It is vital that the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is able to communicate with the media on subjects including conservation, architecture and sustainability, according to new RIBA Pres Marco Goldschmied. The RIBA must avoid becoming a narrow interest group, but must also act as a relevant voice for the promotion of architecture. Attention must focus on boosting understanding of what architecture is and what architects can do to promote it.
