The disposable paper products market in europe expects more major acquisitions and mergers in the future. Mid-sized firms are expected to sell out in major markets of Europe due to over-capacity and stronger price competition. Procter & Gamble may try to offer for James River to boost its European tissue products business to level off with its success in the sanpro sector. Meanwhile, Benelux and its neighbors such as Germany, France and the UK reported a total of 20 major acquisition and merger deals since 1990.

Consumer awareness of the advantages of preventative oral hygiene reportedly increased in European countries such as France, Italy, UK, Germany and Spain. This awareness has contributed to the strong sales of the oral hygiene products, amounting to $1,221 million in 1996. Value growth in the industry is affected by price competition and premium-oriented segmentation. Toothpaste remains the fastest growing segment in the five European markets examined, posting increases in four out of the five markets.
