Compromise sought: dispute highlights scope of China piracy problem

Article Abstract:

Copyright, patent and trademark violations are rampant in China. The US shall be imposing punitive trade sanctions against China effective Feb. 4, 1995 if they fail to stop intellectual property rights violations. The pirating of books, compact and laser disks has been rampant among Chinese entrepreneurs. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry says China has required compact-disk factories to stamp on each disk its factory-origin. Disks without identifying marks are illegal.

News Corp. pursues China alliance for Star TV to rescue floundering Asian satellite operations

Article Abstract:

Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. is engaged in preliminary negotiations to form a joint-venture company between its Hong Kong-based Star TV operation and Chinese state-owned companies which include the national broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV). The resulting company would probably transmit CCTV programs via Star's network and provide Star programs to CCTV. The Chinese are not seen to have a direct-ownership stake in Star as a result of the deal.

Paul Yip, Antony Leung, Leung Chun-ying, Tang Ying-yen, Andrew Li Kwok-nang and Raymond Ch'ien are among the 11 formal advisers assigned to help Tung Chee Hwa in running the country after the handover.
