Concentration and stability in the mutual building society industry

Article Abstract:

The UK's mutual building societies transformed from terminating groups concentrated on building members' houses to financial intermediaries with deposit-taking and mortgage lending operations. The industry changed during the period 1983-92 as the financial services sector also changed due to deregulation and EC market competition expectations. The inverse relationship between building societies' absolute concentration and relative concentration indicated a more equal redistribution of assets among fewer societies.

Testing for expense preference behavior in UK building societies: the implications for measures of scale and scope economies

Article Abstract:

A multiproduct cost function study was used to test expense preference behavior in UK building societies. Results indicate that expense preference behavior is present despite competition in the retail financial services sector. Results also show that profit levels of building societies are still flexible despite intense competition and that mergers, diversification and conglomeration are used to gain access to recognized businesses rather than improve efficiency.
