Creating an identity: a drab industrial building has been transformed by MacCormac Jamieson Prichard into a showcase for Seco

Article Abstract:

A concrete frame office block and factory unit for Seco Tools has been transformed by MacCormac Jamieson Prichard. The refurbishment included a new roof of composite aluminium roofing panels, new glazing and a completely new layout, including a new ramp and steps leading to a glass canopy and vestibule. The reception area features newly commissioned artwork and the concrete staircase has been refurbished. A new section was inserted to house a canteen and the existing kitchen was modified. A further new building houses space for training and demonstration.

A centre by women, for women

Article Abstract:

A derelict, Victorian school building inLiverpool, England, has been transformed into the Blackburne House Centre for Women. Thecentre incorporates teaching facilities as well as a cafe, library, health and sports unit andchildrens' nursery. The building was redesigned by female architects Gladys Martinez andMaggie Pickles. The external appearance remains virtually the same as in 1876 when it wasremodelled, but the inside has been drastically altered to become a stimulating environment forwomen to learn and relax in.

Solving the eight-sided problem: Murray Simmonds Associates' relished the challenge of refurbishing a 1970s octagonal office block

Article Abstract:

Murray Symonds Associates (MSA) was appointed to fit out the interior of an octagonal 1970s office building close to Reading town centre, for Energis, the telecommunications division of the National Grid Company. Existing blockwork partitions were removed creating open plan space and a workable floor to ceiling height was retained by housing lighting within the existing concrete waffle ceiling.
