Conservation is a matter of lifestyle

Article Abstract:

Conservation is basically a matter of lifestyle, rather than fabric, as lifestyle and social values test and threaten the built fabric which many people wish to protect. This theme was highlighted by some speakers at the recent RTPI conference on conservation areas. RTPI president Cliff Hague, for example, suggested that identity and culture are the key elements of conservation policy. He called on planners to work with the construction industry to develop ecologically sustainable buildings.

What truly makes a 'professional'

Article Abstract:

The word 'professional' is misunderstood and abused, being used to describe footballers, rally drivers, athletes and even car salesman. Medicine provides many clear examples of professionalism, with the patient's interest taking precedence over any commercial gains for the surgeon. Distinctions are important, and architects have a responsibility to maintain conditions conducive to providing a competent professional service.
