Crisis ends Malay doctrine

Article Abstract:

The financial crisis of Asia has damaged Malaysia's economic policy at its core. The Mahathir government has had to suspend its affirmative action program that favored indigenous Malays over ethnic Chinese for 28 years. Bumiputras, indigenous Malays, will no longer be kept from selling equity to those of other races. The move is to keep Bumiputras and their firms from bankruptcy. Investors are worried about the banking system, and stock prices are going to new lows. The political establishment is strained, struggling to manage economic problems without giving up policies that helped give the nation the huge industrial growth it has enjoyed.

Article Abstract:

Buddhism in Thailand is in a state of crisis and needs to adapt to a complex modern society. Many Buddhist monks have strayed from the teachings of Buddha which has a core value that states monks must not have anything to do with either sex or money. This situation could be remedied by reforming curricula offered by universities for monks that currently emphasizes intellectual knowledge instead of spiritual growth. Sekhiyadhamma is a group that is attempting to improve the situation by applying Buddhist principle to the modern world.
