Losing its grip

Article Abstract:

General Motors is offering a loyalty voucher, and design innovations. The company's share of the US market has declined, and it has blamed strong demand which its capacity could not meet in much of 1999. The company's profit for 2000 could be affected by a bid to increase its market share through marketing techniques that are expensive. There is speculation that the company's chairman, Jack Smith, could be planning to retire, and he may be succeeded by vice chairman, Harry Pearce.

GM's motor man

Article Abstract:

General Motors (GM) chief executive, Rick Wagoner, faces a world automotive market undergoing consolidation and has to find a balance between industrial necessity and political sensitivity. The company is acquiring a 20% stake in Fiat Auto, which in turn acquires 5% of GM. The two companies will set up part-buying and parts production JVs, but do not plan to pool their assembly operations. Wagoner's goals including increasing the speed of decision making at GM and making it function like one company.
