Cultural revolution: Taiwan director Ang Lee takes on Jane Austen

Article Abstract:

Taiwan-born movie director Ang Lee's antipathy for Hollywood filmmaking has helped him develop a strong body of work focusing on social customs, family rituals, and cultures in transition. His latest movie, 'Sense and Sensibility,' may make him one of the world's elite directors. Based on the Jane Austen novel of the same title, it beautifully evokes the manners of Victorian England and the social tensions they created. This film, following several other successful ones, has made him a prominent Asian-American.

The unkindest cut: domestic film industry hobbled by censorship

Article Abstract:

An artistic and religious dispute in Malaysia over the Malay-language film 'Amok' is setting back govt efforts to foster a strong film industry and generating ill will nationwide. The film, expensive by Malaysian standards, includes six scenes censors wanted to cut, and features a Muslim actress playing a non-Muslim American. The issue became political when producers appealed the Censorship Board's decision, then the Home Ministry banned the film. Islamic faith plays a strong role in the country's politics.
