Czech Republic: Local banks get fit

Article Abstract:

The Czech Republic banking sector is to undertake a programme of strategic mergers and acquisitions in an attempt to compete with Investicni a Postovni Banka, which was purchased by Japanese-based Nomura International at the beginning of 1998. The European Bank for Reconstruction Development is backing the privatization plan, promising an investment of up to 300 million Ecus, which is expected to speed up the programme. Assets of over 10 million pounds sterling will be controlled by a merger between three domestic pension fund companies, forming Vojensky Otevreny Penzijny Fond.

Diary of a deal

Article Abstract:

The share price of UK sport retailer JJB Sport increased 31 pence after hints were given out in a national Sunday paper indicating JJB planned to become involved in a large purchase. The price rose a further 27 pence two days after the press announcement. Sports Division floatation price was put at 350 million pounds sterling on the Wednesday after the first announcement. Press speculation suggests the purchase of Sports Division by JJB Sports will introduce a high quality but cheaper element into the sport retail market.
