Deutsche Bank denies it held US bank talks

Deutsche Bank AG has denied reports that the company engaged in negotiations to buy Bankers Trust, the seventh largest bank in the US. In an interview conducted by Germany's Der Spiegel magazine, Deutsche Chairman Rolf Breuer admitted the bank had talked with Bankers Trust but denied reports that the negotiation involved discussions about a possible acquisition. However, Breuer noted his company will continue to look for opportunities to expand its business worldwide, particulary in the US, through acquisitions.

The U.S. unit of Royal Bank to buy UST

Citizens Financial Group Inc. is planning to expand its franchise in New England by acquiring UST Corp. for $1.4 billion (1.36 billion euros). Citizens is Royal Bank of Scotland Group PLC's unit in the US. The deal must first be approved by regulators before it can be completed. It is expected to increase Citizens' assets to $28 billion. This is an increase of 27%.
