DENMARK: BORDER TRADE THREATENS RECYCLING SYSTEM

Article Abstract:

Border trade in Germany is a threat to the Danish recycling system for beverage packaging, the paper states. Imports of beer from Germany totals 97mn litres a year, corresponding to 17-18% of domestic sales in Denmark, according to a report by Institut for Graensehandel, the Danish institute for border trade. Beer in non-recyclable packaging accounts for the main part of imported beer. However, Miljostyrelsen, the Danish environment authority, is not planning to intervene as a consequence of the report.

Among breweries and retailers, there is a great desire that the new Government abolishes the ban.
