DENMARK: CRITICISM OF US BAN ON EU IMPORTS

Article Abstract:

The Danish food minister Ritt Bjerregaard and the Danish slaughter-house business are critical of the US ban on imports of meat from the EU due to the foot-and-mouth outbreak in France. They fear that Denmark's other export markets will follow suit, which would entail billion krone losses for the country's food exports. Heat-treated cheese was not included in the US import ban, which means that the Swedish-Danish dairy group Arla Foods will not be affected by the 14-day import ban. Denmark accounts for 70% of the EU's pork exports to the US. Denmark is the leading exporter in the world of pork. Danish Crown and Steff Houlberg, the leading slaughter-house companies in Denmark, say the US ban is unfair as France is the only country on the Continent that has had confirmed cases of foot-and-mouth disease.

Article Abstract:

Danish Crown, the Danish meat giant, is calling for the Danish food minister Britt Bjerregaard to play an active role in persuading US authorities to lift the ban on meat imports from the EU including Denmark that was caused by the outbreak of foot and mouth disease. According to Niels Mikkelsen, head of Danish Crown, unless US authorities start differentiating the import ban and allow imports of Danish meat by the end of the next week the food minister should interfere.
