DENMARK:

Article Abstract:

In Denmark, the four UMTS licenses are to be submitted next Wednesday, which means the start for the infrastructure construction. Each UMTS license is expected to cost around DKr500mn (US$58mn). However, the total cost for setting up the Danish UMTS network is estimated at around DKr24bn. According to Dancell manager Erik Hornung, UMTS companies will spend a total of DKr3bn on buying licenses and building networks provided that the price of the license fee does not exceed DKr500mn. Mette S. Ahorlu of the analysis company IDC says an additional cost for operators will be subsidies to customers to buy new phones for the new network. Authorities require that the network should cover 30% of the population by 2004 and 80% by 2008. The National Telecom Agency estimates the combined investments in the telecoms business at DKr8.9bn (US$1bn) last year.

Denmark: Wireless broadband market to expand

Article Abstract:

Several Danish telecom companies have announced that they are going to target the wireless broadband market. TDC has declared that the existing mobile network and the future UMTS services will be supplemented with high-speed wireless broadband networks. Telia Net says the company has already installed such networks in several office premises in Denmark, and Sonofon says it will make use of experiences from Norway, where its parent company Telenor is to install wireless broadband networks. In addition, there are new players on the Danish market which are planning to enter the wireless broadband market. One of these is Dansk Internet Adgang, which is planning to launch a service called Redspot.

DENMARK:GOVT CALLS FOR SECRECY IN UMTS AUCTION

Article Abstract:

The Danish government wants the Danish telecoms companies to remain silent prior to the forthcoming auction of the UMTS licenses. In its letter of 28th February the government is urging telecoms operators "to refrain from any action that could disturb the auction". This way the government aims to prevent companies from co-operating with the view of reaching an agreement about pricing prior to the auction.
