DENMARK: NEW MARKET FOR SMS SERVICES IN JEOPARDY

Article Abstract:

In Denmark, telecoms operators stand to lose between DKr150 and DKr180mn (US$20.9mn) a year as the National Telecom Agency says it is illegal for telecoms operators to offer their customers services, such as news and ring tones, and demand payment for these. The current telecoms act does not allow telecoms companies to charge so-called surcharges for example for news or entertainment sent via SMS. Experts say this bodes a gloomy future for the new UMTS and 3G networks, for which selling content is vital. Torben Rune of the analysis company Netplan and telecoms analyst John Strand are critical of the Telecom Agency's views.

Denmark: Tetra network to be delayed

Article Abstract:

TetraNet and T-Cell in Denmark were the winners of the so-called beauty contest for the Danish TETRA mobile network as they were the only bidders in the contest. They are expected to be formally awarded the licenses this month. The delays in the license process are ascribed to radio-technical aspects and the prospects for regulating the prices of the two mobile telephony companies. The role of the Danish Telecom Agency as regards pricing of TETRA service is yet to be defined. TETRA is a mobile telephony network that supports walkie-talkie type functions used by the police and emergency services among other things.

DENMARK: DYREMOSE CRITICIZES 3G-LICENSE AUCTION

Article Abstract:

Henning Dyremose, CEO of Tele Danmark, criticizes the fact that the Danish government will auction out the country's 3G-licenses in same way as Britain and Germany did. He is also concerned that the awarding of the licenses will come too late, hampering the development of the Danish telecom market.
