HURRY UP, MARAN IS TYING UP THE SOUTH

Article Abstract:

Kalanithi Maran is the managing director of the Sun TV channel. His mainstay is the Tamil Sun TV channel. It netted Rs97 crore through advertisements in 1997-98 compared to Rs60 crore of Doordarshan Chennai. About 92 percent of the cable and satellite (C&S) households in Tamil Nadu tune in to the Sun TV. Maran's Kannada channel, Udaya TV, started in 1995. It is not as successful as the Sun TV. It earned about Rs19 crore through advertisements in 1997-98. Bangalore Doordarshan earned Rs43 crore. He made a foray into Andhra Pradesh acquiring a controlling stake in Gemini TV the performance of which is not very good. Its advertisement revenue is Rs10.6 crore against Rs56.9 crore of another leading Telugu channel, ETV. Maran plans Surya TV Malayalam channel for Kerala and a Bengali channel. (uh) >EN

A REGIONAL FLAVOUR TO THE SATELLITE DISH

Article Abstract:

Satellite television companies are getting ready to launch channels in regional Indian languages. Star TV is launching four new channels in Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati and Punjabi. Asia Television Network, which had closed about six months ago, has planned a relaunch with a 24-hour Bengali channel in alliance with Arihant International of Calcutta. Srishti Videocorp, which operates a 14-hour Gujarati channel, has decided to launch a Punjabi channel within six months. Sun TV plans to launch Sun Plus in Tamil, Gemini Plus in Telugu and Udaya Plus in Kannada. (khr)
