DeBeers S.A. officials continue to negotiate for entry into the US diamond market despite ongoing investigations into antitrust law violations and price-fixing practices. DeBeers officials would like the legal issues resolved, as the US accounts for half of worldwide jewelry sales.

DeBeers, ARS extend diamond sale agreement

Article Abstract:

Almazy Rossii-Sakha, Russia's major diamond producer, and De Beers have agreed to extend their diamond sale agreement to three more years. Under the deal, Almaza will have until the end of 2001 to conduct business with De Beers. In addition to the right to sell 5% of its diamonds from current production and 20% of diamonds from state reserves on the open market, Almaza will also supply De Beers at least $550 million of rough cut diamonds. De Beers Chief Executive Nicholas Oppenheimer signed the new agreement with Almazy in Moscow.
