ECB officials split on rate convergence

Article Abstract:

European Central Bank (ECB) officials are split on the timing of interest rate convergence. Wim Duisenberg, president of ECB, said the consensus supports a gradual move than a drastic fall on the last day before the 11-nation euro zone adopts a single currency in about three months. He is concerned about the results of a big interest rate cut in the final days before a one-currency policy becomes effective. Gwyn Hatch, senior European economist at HSBC in London, UK, said the continuing debate regarding the monetary position of ECB reflects that such conflict is not confined to interest rates.
