Detention stirs concern: many ask why Asia Electronic's Du is still held

Article Abstract:

Foreign investors with investments in China-based TV component manufacturing firm Asia Electronics Holding Co. are confused as to the sudden detention of the company's chairman and CEO Du Qingsong without charges being filed against him. Asia Electronics is a high-growth company manufacturing deflection yokes for colored TVs and many analysts credit Du as the key to the profitability of the company. Officials of US-based Value Investing Partners Inc. are specifically worried over the detention of Du, having footed Asia Electronics' $42 mil initial public offering in the US. The detention has sent Asia Electronic's stocks on the New York NASDAQ exchange to plummet by 27% to $2.5625 as of the July 17, 1998 trading and to trade at $1.6875 as of July 31, 1998.
