Developing an integrated model of an aluminum smelter incorporating sub-models with different time bases and levels of aggregation

Article Abstract:

An integrated production model of an aluminum smelter was developed based on a nonlinear bilevel programming scenario involving sub-models with different time bases and levels of aggregation. The integrated model of the aluminum smelter was composed of sub-models and a core model that were utilized for the generation of solutions that provide efficient production control. Furthermore, the sub-models in the integrated production model were critical for the operation of the effected plants and in the formulation of solutions for better planning and maintenance operations.

Nesting planning based on production priorities and technological efficiency

Article Abstract:

The problem of initial nesting planning in manufacturing processes is analyzed. An efficient nesting model that accounts for potential conflict between work plan priorities and technological efficiency is developed. It is shown that a mathematical programming model that integrates the nesting goals of maximum production priorities, minimum set-up changes and maximum raw material use can be developed.

Effective information horizon length in measuring off-line performance of stochastic dynamic systems

Article Abstract:

The study introduces the effective information horizon (EIH), a new concept that measures the segment of time on which future stochastic information is relevant for the evaluation of the system's performance. The EIH length is calculated by mathematical analysis of the influence of future information on a system's dynamics under a given control strategy.
