Do unto others...: Clinton's human-rights thrust abroad takes shape

Article Abstract:

Pres Bill Clinton on Jun 15, 1993 discussed how his administration will promote democracy and human rights around the world. A new radio service for Asia, Asia Democracy Radio, will be established as promised during the 1992 election campaign. Offices responsible for human rights policy in the State Dept, the Defense Dept and the National Security Council will be accorded greater importance, while the Bureau for Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs will be restructured as the Bureau for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor. How these decisions will affect US policy toward Asia remains unclear.

Spreading the word: Clinton gives priority to promoting democracy

Article Abstract:

Asian countries are monitoring the moves of Pres Bill Clinton to assess whether their misgivings about him were justified. Asians are particularly worried that Clinton's Asia policy would be a mere continuation of the Bush administration's. Tougher tradepolicy, continued withdrawal of US forces and human rights-linked trade relations have been adopted by the Clinton camp. Similarly, the Clinton administration is also intent on promoting democracy in the region.

President Clinton

Article Abstract:

Asian diplomats and foreign affairs experts are worried that the newly elected US president, Bill Clinton's trade reforms and human rights policies will be unfamiliar to Asians. Analysts feel that Clinton will underplay foreign policy and that Asian countries other than Japan and China, will be ignored. Critics also fear that Clinton's promotion of democratic tradition will affect international relations.
