Does Asean matter?: Hun Sen throws down the gauntlet

Article Abstract:

Asean was founded as an anti-Communist bloc during the peak of the Vietnam war, but it now includes Communist Vietnam, a ruling Islamic monarchy, and various democracies. There are still visa controls within the bloc and customs controls between member countries is strict. Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim believes that Asean must review its policy of non-intervention in the internal affairs of members, particularly as he claims that its noninvolvement in Cambodia's reconstruction contributed to the final end of national reconciliation.

Dollar days down under

Article Abstract:

Australia's currency is an excellent market indicator signalling global inflation expectations because it acts as a surrogate commodity basket. US Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan should announce that the Australian dollar is a valuable market indicator, rising in times of inflationary expectations, dropping as global demand for its commodity exports decreases. Gold has serious drawbacks as an anchor for US currency, especially as China and India consume a growing share of production.

Winding down the Mindanao war

Article Abstract:

The Philippine government cannot end the insurgency in Mindanao unless the island's economy is strengthened. It also has to conclude peace agreements with the Moro National Liberation Front and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front without antagonizing local leaders.
