Draining the swamp

Article Abstract:

The UN- sponsored peace agreement established to end war in Cambodia faces its greatestchallenge when UN forces start disarming rival Cambodian armies on Jun 13, 1992 Already, the Khmer Rouge has posed an obstacle to the process when it barred UN Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) chief Yasushi Akashi from entering controlled territory. The disarmament phase of the UN peace process isaimed at creating political stability to allow the safe return of 370,000 refugees from Thailand. Elections planned for May 1993 will also be organized to encourage economic development.

All in the family: expansion-minded Asean won't confront Cambodia

Article Abstract:

Hun Sen's seizure of power caused Asean to postpone Cambodia's entry in to the group. However Asean will still seek ways of bringing Cambodia into the group, possibly within the next 12 months. Diversity could make it more difficult however, to operate by the group's principle of consensus, which in turn would jeopardize its ability to show a united front on major diplomatic issues, such as the battle with China over sovereignty claims. Asean may therefore have to replace its principle of consensus with majority voting on certain issues.

Truce at the top: co-premiers tone down their war of words

Article Abstract:

Cambodian prime ministers Prince Norodom Ranariddh and Hun Sen are patching up their differences, though the rift that opened in March 1996 will remain open for some time, if it ever closes. Factors fueling the crisis in the leadership included pre-election maneuvering, widespread harassment of journalists and Funcinpec officials and offices, and armed robberies and carjackings mainly targeting Westerners. A debate in the National Assembly over a new nationality law will indicate the degree of rapprochement.
