Ballot dance

Article Abstract:

Chung Ju Yung, the 76-year old presidential candidate of the Unification National Party, is focusing his campaign on the economic recovery of South Korea instead of democratic reforms.Even as Chung takes an early lead over veteran politicians Kim Young Sam of theruling Democratic Liberal Party (DLP) and Kim Dae Jung of the opposition Democratic Party (DP), he has been seen as a mere spoiler in the election. Analysts believe that Chung will stay on the campaign trail only up to the point when he could trade his political support for the best possible deal withone of the two Kims.

Local lesson: Kim finds democracy is a two-edged sword

Article Abstract:

The races preceding S Korea's impending local elections have so far focused on local issues such as drinking-water quality, often to the chagrin of leading politicians. President Kim Young Sam strongly backed these elections, the first local ones since 1961, but in his home of Pusan an opposition challenger is trouncing his candidate in polls. However, the opposition's leader, Kim Dae Jung, likewise seems poised to lose his own home province. Some efforts to steer debates could lead to increased regionalism.
