The Tibetan gambit

Article Abstract:

The exiled Tibetan government has rejected the Chinese government's conditional invitation to the Dalai Lama to return to China. The Chinese government wants the Dalai Lama to stop demanding the independence of Tibet. However, the longer the Dalai Lama puts off direct talks with China, the greater is the danger of Tibetans being dominated both demographically and economically by the Han Chinese. Some expatriate Tibetans feel that the Dalai Lama should visit Tibet while he still commands international and domestic support.

Eleventh coming: designation of Panchen Lama stirs a storm

Article Abstract:

The Dalai Lama's selection of Gedhun Choekyi Nyima as the 11th incarnation of the Panchen Lama stirred a political firestorm in China, which claims the right to participate in that process. The six-year-old's predecessor, who died suspiciously in 1989, is controversial for his alleged collaboration with Chinese authorities. The US Congress further fueled Chinese anger by recently passing bills requiring that a special envoy from the US be named to occupied Tibet. The boy's whereabouts are not now known.
