Tangled web; cracking of alleged spy ring shakes opposition

Article Abstract:

South Korean opposition leader Kim Dae Jung's election campaign is in jeopardy after the disclosure of his supporter Kim Nak Jung's illegal activities. Kim Nak Jung has been accused of leading a North Korean spy team and was in possession of $1 million provided by North Korea. Meanwhile, Kim Dae Jung's secretary is being implicated for violating national security. Political analysts are questioning the role of the National Security Planning (NSP) agency in a campaign to politically disrupt Kim Dae Jung's Democratic Party.

Rich men and politicians: President Kim inducts industrialists into party

Article Abstract:

South Korea's governing Liberal Democratic Party is co-opting wealthy businessmen in a bid to ensure success in the June local-govt elections. It is pushing Chung Mong Joon, son of the Hyundai group's founder, as the next mayor of Ulsan, and Ssangyong chairman Kim Suk Won as mayor of Taegu, an opposition stronghold. The Democratic Party has responded by supporting former central-bank governor Cho Soon's campaign for mayor of Seoul. The press has strongly criticized the government's courting of business leaders.

Counting the cost: Daewoo chief opts out of presidential race

Article Abstract:

Kim Woo Choong, leader of textile giant Daewoo, has decided not to run for the South Korean presidency in the Dec 1992 elections, possibly due to discord among the members of Choong's proposed New Korea Party (NKP). This leaves the presidency open to Chung, leader of the United People's Party (UPP), Kim Young Sam and Kim Dae Jung. NKP supporters, meanwhile, will have to look for a replacement if they are to continue in South Korean politics.
