Dumbing down

Article Abstract:

Larger Japanese companies are restructuring, and the government aims to help smaller firms. Setting up a business is attracting fewer younger people, and there are fewer smnall firms, since more have disappeared than have been created. The government sees venture capital companies as to blame. Japanese venture capital companies tend to be linked to large stockbrokers and investment quality is not given enough priority. The Ministry of International Trade and Industry is using an American model and aims to increase its investments. This could create problems if subsidies are used in an inefficient way.

Europe's start-up stampede

Article Abstract:

High technology and internet start-ups in Europe have been encouraged by the increasing availability of venture capital, some of which comes from the US. US attitudes and practices will be as much an influence as the availability of funds from the US. Companies with international connections and experience are especially favored. Europeans have still not become as used to entrepreneurship as have Americans, and there are a number of obstacles in Europe in a range of areas, including simply finding office space.

From labs to riches

America's venture capitalists are thriving amid a booming stockmarket that is operating at a record pace. The venture capital industry, however, could end up harming its investors if the venture-capital partnerships, in which they invest, are allowed to take too much power.
