E-commerce: speculative bubble or engine of economic growth?

Article Abstract:

E-commerce is predicted to account for only 5% of all retail sales in the US despite its apparent success. Internet firms, such as the booksellers Amazon, have had difficulty in making a profit despite diversifying into new products. Some observers have suggested e-commerce transactions between companies will become the major type of business on the Internet. Yet security issues have to be addressed and server technology improved before company to company e-commerce progresses. Some observers have suggested e-commerce firms linked to existing businesses are more likely to succeed.
