Symphony in brown varnish: No workers, no power, no machinery. It was a challenge running a business in 1947, the year that Director magazine was first published

Article Abstract:

Business leaders in 1947 complained about the government's socialist policies, but had to acquiesce. Businesses somehow struggled on, but many of the offices in the country were not up to to proper and decent standards, with many office staff working underground. Most offices contained lumpy wooden furniture, and secretaries used manual typewriters. A five and a half day week was still the norm, and commuting was no easier than it is today.
