Marks & Spencer shares fall 10% after 23% profit slump, warning

Article Abstract:

Marks & Spencer PLC shares declined by 10% after it reported a 23% drop in pretax profit in the first half of 1998 and further warned investors of more problems in the last quarter that will end on Mar. 31, 1998. The company, which is the largest retailer in the UK, had pretax profit of 348 million pounds sterling in the first six months of 1998, compared to 452 million pounds sterling in the year-ago period. The decline was attributed to the strength of the sterling, the high expansion cost and the diminishing consumer confidence level in the UK.
