El Gobierno frena a Renfe el 'renting' de trenes

Article Abstract:

Plans by Spanish rail operator Renfe to acquire 150 new Talgo 200 coaches worth Pta 8,000mn under a renting arrangement have been halted by the central government which claims the 'renting' formula needs to be regulated and specified under a new contract. Renfe's contract with the government expires in 1998 and negotiations for the 1999-2003 contract have only recently begun. The government is said to be concerned that the 'renting' scheme could in fact be camouflaging the purchase of assets. Renfe, meanwhile, claims it continues to look at the 'Renting' alternative. The Talgo trains are to replace a good number of coaches in the Talgo III park, some of which are over 30 years old. Financing for the project had already been sought by Talgo.

Renfe recurre por primera vez al 'renting' para renovar sus trenes sin aumentar la deuda

Article Abstract:

An agreement is reportedly about to be finalised between Spanish rail operator Renfe and train manufacturer Patentes Talgo whereby Renfe will renovate its 300 Talgo III coaches, worth Pta 20,000mn, through a long-term renting arrangement with an option to buy. New Talgo 200 sixth generation coaches would be replacing the old ones currently operating on the lines between Cantabria and Madrid, as well as between Madrid and Alicante. The renting period will be between 14 and 20 years. Any agreement between the two companies must be approved by the ministries of development and finance and by the board of Talgo.
