Environment's ally: 'father' of Malaysia's green movement practises what he preaches

Article Abstract:

Gurmit Singh is universally considered the father of Malaysia's environmental movement. He co-founded to Environmental Protection Society, Malaysia, in 1974, and the Centre for Environment, Technology & Development in 1985, which operates the country's longest-running organic farm. Gurmit tries to live an environmentally sound lifestyle, favoring buses and bicycles, and works with the govt as well as criticizing it; he has been appointed to his fourth 2-year term on the official govt environment board.

Family resemblance: lawyer's new novel parallels his father's ups and downs

Article Abstract:

Philip Jeyaretnam's bestselling novel 'Abraham's Promise' draws on the life of his flamboyant, politically active father JB, though Philip says it is not a simple fictionalization. His book, which suggests Singapore has lost spiritual values and suffered repression in the name of economic growth, may push the boundaries of the govt's tolerance. Philip notes that being his father's son has helped his writing career by automatically generating interest, but hindered his legal one.
