Eton of the East: elite school raises the hackles of nationalists

Article Abstract:

The Pelita Harapan private school will significantly improve the quality of Indonesian education, but not without inflaming social and ethnic tensions. Proponents say the school will provide a quality educational environment, which in turn will stem the intellectual flight of young Indonesians to Singapore, the US or Britain. Opponents counter that the school will cater only to the wealthiest, mostly Ethnic Chinese members of Indonesian society. Furthermore, the school curriculum will be conducted primarily in English instead of the national language of Bahasa Indonesia.

Home from the sea

Article Abstract:

Indonesia's Galang Island will soon receive bridge links to other islands as part of an economic development scheme that threatens the Vietnamese refugee camp there. The site has a low profile even in Indonesia, but has won praise around the world for its humanitarian treatment of refugees. Jakarta has been encouraging people to return to Vietnam, with mixed success; it may soon resort to involuntary repatriation, though that would cost at least $10 million.
