Bombay mix

Article Abstract:

Bombay, India, is a city of contrasts and inequalities, with both Western and Eastern influences. Real estate costs more in Bombay than anywhere else world wide, but there are 15 million slum inhabitants. The different classes do not mix. Suicide is seen as an option among the very poor, though many seem to accept injustice with resignation. There are similarities with England in Victorian times in the way the better-off fear the poor, while the poor may see children as their wealth.

European research takes shape at Cardington

Article Abstract:

The European Concrete Building Project (ECBP) is building and testing four full-size concrete buildings. The seven-storey in-site building features flat-slab floors and is designed to a standard architect's specification for a typical town centre office. These traditional design codes will be tested using the in-situ building. Also optimum formwork systems for concrete frame construction will be identified based on detailed comparative site studies.
