Trade unions Bill will slow sackings

Article Abstract:

The Trade Union Reform and Employment Rights Bill received its second reading in the House of Commons in Nov 1992. Part I of the Bill concerns the reform of the trade unions. All strike ballots will be postal and will be considered separately. Trade unions will have to give 7 days written notice to employers on strike intentions. Failure to do so will result in legal proceedings. Employers will need to consult trade unions over redundancies and consider ways to reduce dismissal numbers. Trade unions will be able to prevent dismissal implementation. The Bill also covers maternity rights and sex discrimination.

Communist Cuba's defiance

Article Abstract:

Cuba's economic and political isolation has not toppled the country's defiant communist government. Economic and political reforms have been implemented that alleviate some of the hardships brought on by the fall of their allies in Russia and Eastern Europe. Equitable food rationing has staved off malnutrition, and the active solicitation of tourists fetches much needed hard currency. Furthermore, the Cuban biomedical industry shows export potential. Slight electoral reforms have prompted active political participation, especially by the country's younger generation.
