Eyes on Indonesian banks

Article Abstract:

Some banking analysts and fund managers advise investors against immediately taking advantage of the seemingly low stock prices of banks in Indonesia. Shares in a number of significant banks amount to 20 cents each or less. The analysts and fund managers fear some issues that can not be readily answered, questions such as what percentage of loan portfolios may be nonperforming in 1998. Nonetheless, several Indonesian banks have started to reduce deposit and interest rates, boosting hopes that borrowers may soon pay less than the exorbitant rate of over 30% annually.

Somber outlook for Singapore's big banks

Article Abstract:

Investors in Singapore banks posted profit gains as bank stocks rallied in the first half of Oct 1998. However, market analysts and fund advisers caution against an immediate increase in bank holdings and attributed the surge to US interest rate cuts that triggered the Asian rally and to news indicating government plans to cut down on corporate taxes. Thus, bank shares are not likely to make major gains versus other Singapore industries going into 1999.
