FRANCE: ART'S SURVEY ON INTERNET ACCESS

Article Abstract:

While more than 50% of Internet users get connected for less than five hours per month in France, around 5% are connected for over 25 hours, a survey by the ART reveals. The average connection time was eight hours and 50 minutes in January 2000. Compared to 5-7% in 2000, there should be 15-30% Internet subscribers with a high speed access in 2003, which would represent more than FFr 3bn in sales that year, from 500mn today. Compared to FFr 1.6bn in access communication and 1.1bn in subscriptions in 1999, the switched Internet access in France should go up at 4bn and 1.4bn in 2000, according to the survey. The total telephone traffic volume for access communication should reach 25bn minutes in 2000, the equivalent of around 15% of France Telecom's total telephone traffic. Video over the Internet, and other applications requiring high speed accesses, will boost the Internet access market in the future. According to the ART, such applications will grab up to 6% of the world-wide network's throughput capacity in 2003, instead of 2% today.
