FRANCE: MINI-BOTTLES OF FERMENTED MILK

Article Abstract:

The sales volume of mini-bottles of fermented milk, started in 1996 by Yakult, have tripled since 1997, when Danone's Actimel came on to the market. This market is now evaluated at 6,016 tonnes for a turnover of FFr 182mn, and it is forecast to reach 10,000 tonnes in the year 2000. The vitality of this market has attracted another operator, B'A from Lactalis, formerly Besnier, which has introduced Force Vitalite, a product containing Bifidus and vitamin C. The goal set by B'A is to sell over 1,000 tonnes of Force Vitalite by one year from now. Competition is expanding and a price war is raging on this buoyant market. Danone's Lactel leads the market with an 89.3% volume market share, followed by LCI/Nestle with 9.9%, Yakult with 0.9%, and B'A.

Casino has introduced Casino Bio, a line of 18 grocery and chilled food products - churned butter, fresh cream, whole milk yogurt, fruit juice, rusks, pasta, table oil, etc. These products are attractively priced: FFr 6.20 for a 150 rectangle package of butter, FFr 8.15 for 75 cl of apple juice, FFr 7.65 for 125 g of Breton patties.
