Article Abstract:

The Royal Flying Corp. established an aerodrome in 1913 for the central flying schools' experimental flying section, where it tested aerial photography, bomb and gun sights and evaluated aircraft. In 1924 the Aeroplane and Armaments Experimental Establishment moved in and Orford Ness was used as a firing and bombing range, but in 1993 the National Trust took over from the Ministry of Defense and began managing the site for nature conservation particularly restoring the shingle habitat and a program of managed dereliction with some conservation of military structures.

Special report - landscape

Article Abstract:

The ongoing problems of how to finance, manage and maintain parks and open spaces in the UK have not been addressed, despite lottery funding for some public landscape and urban design projects. It is hoped that the existence of the Urban Parks Programme will help the long term management of public open space, and the New Opportunities Fund is also aimed at this problem. Some of the more interesting British-design landscape projects are those by multi-disciplinary teams, but often there is a problem with the public perception of tidiness in landscape.

Where landscape comes first: With substantial public funding, Bernard Huet and FFL's Parc de Bercy is central to the redevelopment of inner-city Paris

Article Abstract:

Bernard Huet, together with FFL and landscape architect the late Ian Le Caisne, won the competition for the Parc de Bercy in Paris, in 1987. The park is designed to reflect its history of plot and subdivision, with visible elements of line and structure. The park was opened in three stages in 1994, 1995 and 1997 and is seen as central to a general redevelopment area.
