Fear of Islam

Article Abstract:

The dissolution of the Soviet Union and the outcome of the 1991 Persian Gulf War have changed the relationship between the US and the Islamic nations from Central Asia to North Africa. With the former Soviet Union no longer communist, pan-Islamists have begun to target the US as their principal enemy. US officials are however divided over the fundamentalist threat. Some see it as inevitable and containable while others say fundamentalism will never be compatible with western political values and should be opposed.

Stormy weather: tension behind the smiles at Mahathir-Suharto talks

Article Abstract:

Both Mahathir and Suharto attempted to dispel the perception of a strained relationship at their Jul 1993 bilateral summit. Although some progress was reached on territorial disputes and bilateral investment, officials remain concerned about the clash of personality between the two leaders. The problem is due primarily to Mahathir's aggressive pursuit of regional diplomatic objectives and to differing views on the role of the East Asia Economic Caucus and other bodies in regional economic cooperation.

Parochial mandate: new Congress may take a harder line on Asia

Article Abstract:

Asians are worried that Pres Bill Clinton's Asian policy will focus mainly on democracy and human rights in Asia and affect US-Asia trade and military activity. The Congress may become more liberal in its attitude to Asia if Lee Hamilton or Sam Gejdenson join the House Foreign Affairs Committee and Tom Lantos joins the Asian and Pacific Affairs Subcommittee. Similarly, reshuffles in the trade and military committees will affect US relations with Asia.
