Games put pressure on Beijing

Article Abstract:

China's successful bid to host the 2008 Olympic Games will require a hurculean effort and will be a political football over the next several years, as Western nations try to force Beijing to improve its record on human rights. The International Olympic Committee will be under pressure to remove the games from China if improvements are not made. Corporate sponsors and human rights activists will be keeping a close eye on how China handles itself.

Architects prepare for a pricey facelift

Beijing is planning to spend $22 billion on enewal projects in preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games, including new subway and light rail transportation lines, 19 new sports venues, and cultural preservation efforts. Critics say that Beijing has long neglected urban planning issues, although for centuries the city was a planned capital centering on the Forbidden City. Few see threat to Yuan: a trade surplus may support currency

Article Abstract:

The Chinese Yuan is continuously supported by a large trade surplus in 1998 and 1999. The country's trade surplus has reached $38.4 bil at the end of October 1998, up 7.8% from 1997. The stability of the yuan is influenced by the huge supply of dollars. Meanwhile, exports in China for the first 10 months of 1998 reached $148.8 bil, up 1.3%, while imports reached $110.3 bil, down 0.7%.
