European Commission takes a step toward ending ban on British beef

Article Abstract:

The European Commission has proposed the lifting of the two-year-old prohibition on British beef exports. In March 1996, exports of British beef was banned because of the outbreak of mad-cow disease among British cattles. The plan, if approved, would allow Britain to once again export its beef products, including deboned meat from cattles that are born after August 1996. Franz Fischler, agriculture commissioner at the European Union, said the continuation of exporting British beef products would depend on Britain's compliance to the requirements the country submitted to the commission in 1997, and one of the conditions is having documentation on the origins and movements of all cattle used for export. Britain's beef farmers suffered losses after disposing of large portions of their herds.
