Finishing school: military academy remains crucible of officer class

Article Abstract:

The attack by soldiers on unarmed demonstrators in Bangkok, Thailand in May 1992 had a strong impact on the country's Chulachomklao Royal Military Academy. Charges that the academy has been a launching pad for officers bent on political careers since it was founded in 1887 furthered its decline in prestige. This, combined with low military salaries and increasing interest in non-military avenues to politics, helped to cut the number of applicants from 5,000 in 1992 to 3,500 in 1993. However, the academy's commitment to tradition will probably help it survive current social problems.

Bangkok's night-riders: tryst with destiny

Article Abstract:

Illegal high-speed motorcycle racing by gangs of young men on the streets of Bangkok, Thailand has become a major source of public disorder. The weekly races, popularly called sing, take place at night on weekends. Deaths and injuries are common because of the high speeds and recklessness of the racers, most of whom are middle-class sons in their late teens or early twenties. Middle-class prosperity that allows the purchasing of motorcycles and lack of parental supervision may be the root causes of this behavior. Thai police are trying to stop the racing but with mixed success.
