Americans may call the shots in shake-up of UK's telecoms

Article Abstract:

E.M. Warburg Pincus and Co. (New York, NY), venture capital company, could be in the running to acquire Mercury Communications (UK), telecommunications operator, which will have to be disposed of by its owner, Cable and Wireless (C&W), if British Telecom and C&W merge. Other possible contenders for Mercury are AT and T, US telephone operator, Deutsche Telekom (Germany), state owned telephone operator, and Bell Canada International, which has a 20% stake in Mercury.

First light

Article Abstract:

Extrasolar planets are those that orbit distant stars, and they are not easy to observe. Their light comes from the nearby star rather than from the planets themselves, so direct observation is not possible. Andrew Cameron is a researcher from Scotland's University of St Andrews, and he has observed Tau Bootis, a star with a close planet. He has been able to isolate this planet's light from the light of Tau Bootis. Other observers have to confirm his results.
