Fish price setting group collapses

Article Abstract:

The Fisheries Association of Newfoundland which participated in fish price negotiations with fishermenEs union has been dissolved as it was felt that the group had become ineffective in price setting. FANL had internal problems and facing investigation for working as a cartel and fixing prices of shellfish. However, some in the industry believe that the groupEs collapse may adversely affect the shrimp industry.

Danish fishing schools popular

Article Abstract:

With an aim to bring youngsters to the fishing industry, Danish Fishermen's Association commenced a campaign for hiring young fishermen. The campaign has got a good response and the members are being given theoretical and practical training in small vessels. The surprising fact is that the campaign has attracted members not from fishing families but youngsters from big towns are enthusiastic to be trained.

Russian quota revolution

Article Abstract:

Five-year quota system was designed to stimulate the fishing industry and enable the Russian operators to scrap old ships and build new ones. The State Fisheries Committee would setup quotas for each type of boat fishing gear and species encouraging owners to cut overcapacity and move their quotas to more efficient boats.
