The National Health Service has made many improvements in efficiency, but faces steep cost increases for new drugs, doctors' salaries and elder care. To quell election fears of health cuts, the Tory government overpromised on the issue and will have a tough time politically making new cost-cutting stick.

A bridge too far: dentists

Article Abstract:

The UK's National Health Service (NHS) has lowered the fees participating dentists may charge by 7%, in response to a report that dentists' average income will exceed its NHS target by 4,000 pounds. Some dentists can be expected to refuse to treat NHS patients as a result of the new fee structure.

Bottomley promised $245 million for primary health care, including general practitioners, but will reduce hospital capacity by as much as 20% over five years. Health services in London have been criticized because too much funding had been diverted to hospitals.
