Flaming truth

Article Abstract:

Flame of Forest is the leading publishing company in Singapore although it is not apparent from the way their offices look. Its operations are based in an industrial park on Yishun and it is from this site that Flame of Forest plots how to revolutionize the Singaporean publishing industry. Managing director Alex Chacko acknowledges that the company is out to make money and to accomplish this Flame of Forest focuses on what is demanded by the market. The successful releases of Flame of Forest releases have encouraged other Singaporean publishers to also become more market-oriented.

Between God and Mammon; in Malaysia, Muslims are learning to live in the modern world - and many like it

Article Abstract:

More than 30 years of rapid economic growth have forced Malaysia's Muslims to confront the modern world. The rise in urban consumer mentality has fueled a revival of interest in Islamic culture among many Malays. A large number of Malaysians see changes brought about by the economic boom as a threat to their religion while others view it as evidence that Islam can withstand modern society and flourish. The government of Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad espouses a more tolerant and secular vision of Islam than does more fundamentalist elements in the country.

Freedom of expression

Article Abstract:

Prominent Hong Kong architect Tao Ho attributes his successful return to art after a three-decade hiatus to his very lack of technical training, saying it gives him freedom to experiment. His paintings and sculptures were recently exhibited at the Hong Kong University Museum, a display of pen-and- ink drawings, lithographs, acryclic paintings, and sculptures in several media, from both the past few years and the late 1950s, when he studied art history at Williams College and architecture at Harvard, both in MA.
