The success of airline and airport operator Emirates Group and the reaction of its competitors is discussed. The company, based in the United Arab Emirates, has seen an average of 25% annual growth in passenger numbers over the past 20 years, and is now ruffling feathers at the world's largest carriers with its low cost fares.

Virgin America may be new threat to U.S. airlines

The U.S. Department of Transportation has ruled that Virgin America Inc. meets U.S. ownership rules, provided it replaces CEO Frederick W. Reid. The ruling makes the airline a potential threat to lower-cost American airlines. Mr. Reid plans to argue against the Department of Transportation's proviso.

Another Alitalia Board member resigns

The Italian government is planning to sell Alitalia Linee Aeree Italiane S.p.A. of Italy. Chief Executive Jean-Cyril Spinetta is the second board member to resign, leaving the board with only two members. The airlines operator plans to hold a shareholder meeting to appoint new board members.
