Holding the baby: architects and childcare

Article Abstract:

Architecture does not offer any special help for architects wanting to combine a career with looking after small children. Rules on maternity leave are those laid down by the state. The practices offering the greatest consideration are either in the public sector or run by women. The Royal Institute of British Architects has no equal opportunity policy and women would benefit from a statement of agreed good practice. Architecture does offer some opportunities for working from home but most part-time architects find promotion limited.
