Article Abstract:

It has become extremely common in the industrialized world for mothers to take employment outside the home. This means that they are often under considerable time pressures, but they benefit in terms of increased spending power. Women have gained economic independence, and this, along with control over their fertility, has had a significant impact on the nature of the relationship between men and women. There is no longer a belief that women need men to provide for their children. In turn, men feel less responsible for their families and are thus more likely to abandon them.

Article Abstract:

Gorlitz and Zgorzelec were one city until 1945, when Gorlitz became part of Germany and Zgorzelec part of Poland. Today the differences between the towns is even more pronounced, as Gorlitz is being spruced up by wealthy Germany, while Zgorzelec languishes as Poland struggles.
